Quelle      Übersetzung: K. You are thieves of history!’ Hotovely tells Palestinians, waving books at them - Jonathan Ofir - Speaking on Wednesday at the Knesset, Tzipi Hotoveli, Israel’s highest ranking diplomat, went on a rant against Palestinians, calling them “thieves of history”:

“You are thieves of history. Your history books are empty, and you are trying to co-opt Jewish history and Islamicize it.”

Hotoveli’s accusation was aimed at Palestinian-Israeli Members of Knesset, whom Israel doesn’t even consider Palestinian but rather ‘Israeli Arabs’. Hotoveli waved two books at them, the bible and Assaf Voll’s recent book, “History of the Palestinian People”, an empty 132-page book which was recently pulled from Amazon meant to suggest that no such history exists.

This book is empty. Do you know why it is empty? Because they have no kings, they have no heritage sites. The Palestinians are violating Jewish heritage sites. …

David, Moses, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Sarah, Rebecca, and Leah are the patriarchs and matriarchs of the Jewish nation. You will not succeed in Islamicizing them, you will not succeed in eradicating the bible.

Hotoveli is Israel’s Deputy Foreign Minister. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu holds the Foreign Ministry portfolio himself.

Her fulmination was set against the backdrop of the recent UNESCO resolution that lists Al-Khalil (Hebron) and the Al-Ibrahimi mosque (Tomb of Patriarchs) as Palestinian world heritage sites, an act which Israel’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Immanuel Nahshon regarded as a promoting “fake history”, despite its recognition of the sites’ importance to the three Abrahamic religions – Judaism, Christianity and Islam. It was not the fact that the sites were recognized that enraged Israeli leaders, but that they were recognized as Palestinian. >>>

Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely to Arab MKs: You are thieves of history

The story behind the Jerusalem attack: How Trump and Netanyahu pushed the Palestinians into a corner - Ramzy Baroud - Early October 2016, Misbah Abu Sbeih left his wife and five children at home and then drove to an Israeli police station in Occupied Palestinian East Jerusalem. The 39-year-old Jerusalemite was scheduled to hand himself over to serve a term of 4 months in jail for, allegedly, trumped up charges of ‘trying to hit an Israeli soldier’.

Misbah is familiar with Israeli prisons, having been held there before on political charges, including an attempt to sneak into and pray at Al-Aqsa Mosque. Al-Aqsa Mosque is part of a large compound known as Haram al-Sharif, which includes – aside from Al-Aqsa – the famed Dome of the Rock and other Palestinian Muslim sites, revered by Muslims everywhere.

Al-Aqsa is believed to be the second mosque ever to be built, the first being Masjid al-Haram in Mecca. The Holy Quran mentions it as the place from which Prophet Mohammed ascended to heaven, journeying from Mecca to Jerusalem. For Palestinians, Muslims and Christians alike, the Mosque took on a new meaning following the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian city of al-Quds (East Jerusalem) in 1967.

Scenes of Israeli soldiers raising the Israeli flag over Muslim and Christian shrines in the city fifty years ago, is burnt into the collective memory of several generations. Unsurprisingly, therefore, that the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound has been the focal point of clashes between Palestinian worshipers and the Israeli army.

Daily visitors to the Muslim holy shrines in Jerusalem include non-Muslims tourists. They are often welcomed by Al-Waqf administration, which is the Islamic religious trust that manages the holy shrines, a practice dating back 500 years. Even after the Israeli occupation of the Arab city, al-Waqf has continued to be the caretaker of the Muslim site, as arranged between the Jordanian government and Israel. Israeli design in the occupied city, however, is far greater than the Mosque itself. >>>

Premature babies and sick children at risk from Gaza's constant blackouts - Today, the territory's power cuts are the worst in recent memory, with the strip going dark for longer stretches than it did in wartime - Naomi Zeveloff

In the neonatal intensive care unit at Al Shifa hospital in Gaza City, newborn babies lie in beeping plastic incubators as transparent tubes deliver oxygen and nutrients into their tiny bodies. Most of them were born prematurely, some weighing less than a bag of sugar with feet no bigger than dates.

These babies are the most vulnerable people in one of the most vulnerable places in the world, the Gaza Strip, a territory of two million that has been under Israeli siege for the past 10 years. Now, as Gaza sinks deeper into an electricity crisis — most households get four hours of electricity every 24 hours at latest count — these infants are at further risk. If the machines they are attached to lose power, they could lose their lives.

Al Shifa hospital uses generators as backup, but the system is not infallible. Any interruption in electricity will be a “catastrophe”, said Allam Abu Hameda, the doctor who oversees the neonatal intensive care unit, or NICU.

He had just finished checking on two infants lying on an open cot. It was a sweltering July day at the peak of a Middle Eastern heatwave, but the NICU was cool, one of the few rooms in the hospital where air conditioning is imperative for care.

Gaza’s blackouts are a humanitarian crisis caused by politics, part of the larger trend of “de-development” in the strip over the past 10 years of Israeli blockade and Hamas rule, as described by a United Nations report last week. In 2006, after Hamas kidnapped Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit — who was later released in a prisoner swap — Israel bombed Gaza’s power plant. Though it was later repaired, it never again reached full capacity. Electrical lines from Egypt and Israel supply additional power to the strip, but not enough to meet demand. For around the past 10 years, Gaza has been on a severe schedule of eight hours with power followed by eight hours without. >>>

Welcome: A letter from Mahmoud Darwish - Mahmoud Darwish - The renowned Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish was the first writer that the Palestine Festival of Literature approached with a request to be a Founding Patron. He accepted. He was due to speak at PalFest’s inaugural event in the occupied West Bank city of Ramallah in May 2008 but medical reasons prevented him from attending. He sent a letter instead. Darwish passed away three months later in August.

The English translation of his 2008 letter features as the opening piece of This Is Not a Border, a newly published collection of essays, diaries and poems marking a decade of PalFest. Darwish’s letter appears online here for the first time.

Dear Friends, I regret that I cannot be here today, to receive you personally. Welcome to this sorrowing land, whose literary image is so much more beautiful than its present reality. Your courageous visit of solidarity is more than just a passing greeting to a people deprived of freedom and of a normal life; it is an expression of what Palestine has come to mean to the living human conscience that you represent. It is an expression of the writer’s awareness of his role: a role directly engaged with issues of justice and freedom. The search for truth, which is one of a writer’s duties, takes on – in this land – the form of a confrontation with the lies and the usurpation that besiege Palestine’s contemporary history; with the attempts to erase our people from the memory of history and from the map of this place. >>>
