Grenzenloser Hass
Uri Avnery
Juli 9, 2016

ACCORDING TO THE LOGIC OF POWER, IT PROVES THAT
ISRAEL IS ABOVE THE LAW. WE NEED... PEOPLE FROM

Saleh Abu Mohsen, father of Asil Abu Mohsen, killed by Israeli forces
on 1 August 2014, talking to Amnesty International in May 2016
-

8 July 2016 marks the second anniversary of Israel’s 50-day military offensive in Gaza, codenamed Operation Protective Edge, which brought unprecedented death and destruction to the Gaza Strip in 2014. Both Israeli forces and Palestinian armed groups committed war crimes and other serious violations of international law during the hostilities. Neither side has held anyone to account, nor conducted genuine, independent criminal investigations. Since the end of the conflict, only three Israeli soldiers have been charged with criminal offences, for looting and obstructing an investigation.

Against the backdrop of hundreds of serious violations, including war crimes, documented by human rights groups, these charges are negligible and go nowhere near the heart of the problem. During the conflict, 1,462 Palestinian civilians in Gaza, including 551 children, and six civilians in Israel were killed. Schools, medical facilities, water and sanitation networks, farms and businesses across the Strip were severely damaged or destroyed, and Gaza’s only power plant was badly damaged. More than 18,000 homes in Gaza were destroyed or damaged beyond repair, leaving some 100,000 people homeless. >>>

Answering Yair Lapid’s (contemptuous) questions about refugees -  Jonathan Ofir -  Israeli MK Yair Lapid (‘centrist’ Yesh Atid party) asks UNRWA Spokesperson Chris Gunness questions (posted on his Facebook wall yesterday, 5th of July), referring to Gunness’scritique of yesterday’s two “punitive” house demolitions in Qalandia refugee camp in the West Bank.

I decided to answer each and every one myself (I’ll present it as Q&A between “Lapid” and “Me”).

Lapid: UNRWA Spokesperson Chris Gunness harshly criticized our decision to demolish the homes of two terrorists who last December stabbed two Israelis to death at the Jaffa Gate in Jerusalem. I have one question for Mr. Gunness: What does this have to do with you?

Me: Mr. Lapid, it happens to be that Mr. Gunness is Spokesperson, Director of Advocacy & Strategic Communications for UNRWA. When you demolish houses, you are committing a war crime. As Gunness already points out in his critique (did you actually read it?), “Punitive home demolitions are a form of collective punishment which are illegal under international law. They inflict distress and suffering on those who have not committed the action that led to the demolition and they often endanger people and property in the vicinity”. The demolitions affect many other family members. Here, they are targeting refugees, already under the auspices of UNRWA, so of course it is a concern of Gunness. Israel may say that the welfare of the refugees are not its concern, but they should be. As Gunness also notes, “under international humanitarian law it [Israel] has an obligation to protect the occupied people and provide services”. Gunness is picking up the slack for you. It is very much to do with him. >>>-

Netanyahu vs. the Generals : Israel’s prime minister is fighting hard to weaken the most important moderate force in his country. Which is why he’s going to be a big problem for the next U.S. president.
Amir Tibon - But Netanyahu doesn’t seem to be going anywhere; instead it is Israel’s former generals, like Barak, who are being marginalized while the longest-running prime minister in the Jewish state’s history consolidates his power. Barak wasn`t speaking only for himself when he attacked Netanyahu in such strong language. Over the past few months, the top news story in Israel has been the right-wing prime minister`s tectonic power struggle with Israel`s security establishment. One after the other, Israel`s top security chiefs and military leaders have criticized Netanyahu`s flagship policies and warned about the direction in which he is leading the country, typically over his refusal to engage in talks with the Palestinians and his push for military action against Iran. >>>

Dispelling the myths about building in Jerusalem - In Jerusalem, construction of Jewish neighborhoods continues unabated, while Palestinians are still struggling for basic infrastructure. - Aviv Tatarsky - The father of the Sabach family stands in the ruins of his son's family home a few hours after it was demolished by Israeli authorities, East Jerusalem, May 20, 2013. He is holding a portrait from 1983 in which he and his own father are seen standing near their demolished home in the Anata neighborhood. There is no construction freeze. As opposed to declarations by right-wing politicians such as Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat or Education Minister Naftali Bennett, construction in Jerusalem was never frozen, while the cranes and bulldozers keep working tirelessly in the city’s Jewish neighborhoods located beyond the Green Line. Thousands of housing units in Gilo, Har Homa, Ramot, Pisgat Ze’ev, and Ramat Shlomo. These not only provide housing for Israelis — they establish facts on the ground in order to make partitioning the city, and as well as reaching a two-state solution, all the more difficult. This, of course, does not stop Israel’s ministers from complaining about a “construction freeze.”

There is a freeze on construction plans and tenders in Jerusalem. In 2012 the government approved a plan for over 6,000 housing units beyond the Green Line in Jerusalem. In 2013 and in the first three months of 2014 Israel published tenders for nearly 2,500 units in Ramat Shlomo, Gilo, etc. But since the breakdown in negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians, lead by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, in April 2014, Israel has hardly published tenders or promoted construction plans. This fact should be taken to heart by all those — on both the Right and the Left — who have eulogized the two-state solution. The solution has yet to reach its expiration date, and if anything is keeping it alive it is sheer political will — not the reality on the ground. There is a construction freeze for Palestinians. Despite the severe >>>

Prime Minister Netanyahu and the Arab Peace Initiative - Henry Siegman -  Whatever incitement the Palestinian Authority may be guilty of, it pales into insignificance when compared to the incitement that is Israel’s half-century long occupation >>>

Israel accused of ‘cruel and inhuman’ border crossing conditions for Palestinians by NGO - Peter Yeung -  A human rights NGO has accused Israel of forcing Palestinians to withstand “cruel and inhuman” conditions at its borders. The Israeli Information Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories, also known as B`Tselem, said even those with legitimate work permits were being made to wait for hours in extremely hot weather. B`Tselem posted an image onto its Facebook account and said in a statement: “The Palestinians photographed waiting in line have permits that allow them to work in Israel. Such permits are issued only after meticulous security screening .>>>

10-year old girl arrested on settler children accusation - International Solidarity Movement - A large group of settler children were playing near the Ibrahimi mosque, again and again harassing a family living next to a checkpoint manned by heavily-armed Israeli forces. When a boy accused one of the Palestinian children of throwing a rock at them, all the settler children and large numbers of Israeli forces gathered at the house. A group of soldiers then entered the house with the settler boy, and eventually came out with the 10-year old girl, crying. They then walked her off to the police station, despite her young age >>>
