Palestinians sue billionaire Sheldon Adelson for Israeli war crimes - Charlotte Silver - A group of Palestinians and Palestinian Americans are seeking $34.5 billion dollars in damages from wealthy individuals and companies they accuse of financing and profiting from Israel’s settlements in the occupied West Bank and other abuses of their rights.

The plaintiffs include Palestinians who have lost family members in Israeli attacks in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Their lawsuit is the latest effort to expose and curb the role of organizations that operate as tax-exempt US charities in fueling violence and settlement expansion on occupied Palestinian land.

It names as defendants US tycoons Sheldon Adelson, Haim Saban, Irving Moskowitz and Oracle founder Lawrence Ellison. >>>

Turning entire Palestinian villages invisible - Umar al-Ghubari - Standing on the “Ayalon Valley Lookout,” the villages of Beit Sira, Beit Liqya, Kharbatha, Beit Ur al-Fuka, Beit Ur al-Tahta and Safa are in front of your eyes on the opposite mountain range. They are visible even more clearly than are Modi’in and Shaalabim, which you can see only by craning your neck to the north and to the south. The colonizer fails to see the natives, even though they are right there before him. The sign tells you to look at the view, and to fail to see the Palestinian; to see a purely Jewish landscape. Ignore the rest. Or better yet, make it unseen. >>>

Israel’s security figures take aim at hard-line Netanyahu - Dan Perry and Josef Federman - Boston Globe - On Tuesday, a group representing more than 200 retired leaders in Israel’s military, police, Mossad spy service, and Shin Bet security agency presented a plan to help end the half-century occupation of the Palestinians through unilateral steps, including disavowing claims to over 90 percent of the West Bank and freezing Jewish settlement construction in such areas. >>>

‘I was wrong in my presumption that Israel desired peace’ – Chas Freeman - The cover of Ambassador Chas W. Freeman's new book published by Just World Books, "America's Continuing Misadventures in the Middle East" The cover of Ambassador Chas W. Freeman's new book published by Just World Books, "America's Continuing Misadventures in the Middle East"

The following is an excerpt from Ambassador Chas W. Freeman’s new book America’s Continuing Misadventures in the Middle East. You can listen to his recent podcast on the book with Helena Cobban here.

To be disillusioned, one must first have illusions. Few things have been as disillusioning to partisans of the consolidation of a secure homeland for Jews in the Middle East (the most important objective of U.S. diplomacy in the region for decades) as the evolution of Israeli policies and practices over the past quarter-century. This period began with an internationally sponsored conference in Madrid from October 30 to November 1, 1991. The Madrid Conference brought Israel, its Arab neighbors, and the Palestine Liberation Organization together for the first time in an effort to achieve regional acceptance for the Jewish state. This led by circuitous means to the signing in Washington (on September 13, 1993) of the Oslo accords, which envisaged Palestinian elections to establish self-government, Israeli withdrawal from Palestinian lands, and a process of self-determination that would culminate within five years in the establishment of a Palestinian state alongside Israel.

This era may be said to have definitively ended on October 26, 2015, when Israeli prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu told the Knesset that, while he rejected the idea of a binational state, Israeli Jews “need to control all of the territory [of historic Palestine] for the foreseeable future.” Mr. Netanyahu showed that he understood that this would preclude a secure peace for Israel with Palestinians, other Arabs, and the world’s Muslims when he added, “I’m asked if we will forever live by the sword—yes.” >>>

Israel/Palestine Middle East US Politics Activism Features Dershowitz approves Clinton’s ‘muscular foreign policy,’ and Sen. Warren is a ‘surprising Israel hawk’ US Politics - Philip Weiss -  Hillary Clinton is gaining the support of the neoconservative establishment. Alan Dershowitz is for her “muscular foreign policy.” Robert Kagan is holding a fundraiser for her. Jennifer Rubin tells other neocons to get on board now so that Clinton can end the Obama chill to the Jewish state. Alas, even Elizabeth Warren is caught up in the orgy of testimonials to Israel Clinton has been campaigning lately with the Massachusetts Senator, and there is talk that Warren will join Clinton’s ticket. Today the Forward scans Hillary Clinton’s short list for veep nominees and finds that Warren is a “surprising Israel hawk.” >>>

For Netanyahu, every peace initiative is an anti-Zionist plot - Haokets - What kind of hope does the prime minister offer us when every attempt to bring about peace is rejected as a plot to destroy Israel? - Yossi Dahan

Less than a year ago, in a rare moment of honesty, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu presented his vision for Israeli citizens, in present and future tense. It happened during a meeting of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, which came together to mark the assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. “These days there is talk about what would have happened if someone or other would have remained. This is not relevant… we will forever live by the sword.” From Netanyahu’s blood-soaked vision, as opposed to, say, Rabin’s vision of hope, we can tease out his worldview and political behavior. In fact, his remarks summarize his continual refusal to respond to every single initiative that attempts to bring about the end of the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians through negotiations. >>>

Israel`s stop-and-frisk law `blatant racism` : The recent legislation is a form of collective punishment towards Jerusalem and its youth, rights groups say. - Zena Tahhan - According to the law, soldiers can inspect any individual, in specific locations, without having to answer for their actions. This has resulted in what rights groups describe as "openly racist" treatment towards Palestinians who are being body searched, sometimes aggressively, based solely on their appearance. "Any Palestinian who is passing by is subject to being searched. Israeli soldiers would make them stand from between 15 minutes to an hour. It is not just that they search them - but the way they are being searched is humiliating," said Nisreen Allayan, the lawyer for the East Jerusalem project at the Association for Civil Rights in Israel. >>>

Ramadan soup kitchen offers brief respite to Gaza`s poor - Sakher Abou El Oun -  In her modest home in the Gaza Strip, Sahar Sherif’s family watches as she ladles out a broth of meat and vegetables for a rare heart-warming meal. For just a month of the year, a soup kitchen in the Palestinian enclave is offering struggling families like Sherif’s a welcome break from daily worries about where they will find their next meal.>>>

How media blackout on Hebron shooter trial will undermine IDF - Mazal Mualem - Azaria’s trial will also have enormous importance in the battle over the country’s values. Furthermore, the judges could decide that there were expedient circumstances behind his decision to shoot and kill a neutralized attacker. But if the court accepts the prosecution’s request and the important testimonies are delivered behind closed doors, the court will be betraying its own role in the process and contribute to further blurring the boundaries between what is moral and what is political.>>>

Youngest administrative detainee Hamza Hammad ordered to four more months in prison without charge - Samidoun - The Israeli administrative detention order against Palestinian boy, Hamza Hammad, was renewed on Monday, 27 June for an additional four months. Hammad, 16, from Silwad near Ramallah, has been imprisoned without charge or trial on the basis of secret evidence since 28 February 2016.>>>

Documentary About ‘The Settlers’ Shows Them as Israeli Left Wants To See Them - Yitz Landes - Shimon Dotan’s recent documentary, “The Settlers,” currently attracting a lot of attention in Israel, is painfully beautiful. Dotan’s shots capture both the beauty of the West Bank and the complexity of the geopolitics that are tragically tearing it apart. Along with the fantastic production, Dotan’s skills as an interviewer present the settlers, an often-misunderstood segment of Israeli society, to a wide audience. Yet the film has much more to teach us about the dogma of left-wing Israelis than it does about settlers >>>
