Brutal, ugly & illegal: 9 things you need to know about the Israeli occupation of Palestine - The Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement is gaining new ground by the day. Here's why - David Palumbo-Liu

As this story goes to press, the American Anthropological Association is voting on an academic boycott resolution in solidarity with the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement. If it passes the resolution, it will become the largest academic association in the world to do so, joining dozens of professional academic organizations, unions, and student unions in the United States and Europe. The AAA boycott resolution has now also just received an endorsement from twenty-two Israeli anthropologists, whose letter reads in part:

“We agree that we have reached a crisis point, where under certain international conditions, another mass expulsion of Palestinians could occur—or worse… We believe it is possible to take a positive stand against this reality. The Palestinian call for BDS is at its core an anti-colonial, non-violent form of international protest against an enormously violent occupation.”

The Occupation is at the forefront of the U.S. political scene as well, even when politicians dance around the issue. Recently, four candidates for president, including Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, made it a point to voice their ardent support for Israel at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) convention. The title of an article in Haaretz says it all: “The Candidates at AIPAC: Pandering by Numbers: Clinton or Trump? What does it matter? The AIPAC conference was Benjamin Netanyahu’s victory lap.” The article summarizes the sorry spectacle thusly: >>>

European call: Stop the criminalisation of the BDS movement for justice in Palestine!

Stop the criminalisation of the BDS movement for justice in Palestine

Support grassroots human rights activists across Europe!

As Israel is increasingly unable to defend its regime of apartheid and settler colonialism over the Palestinian people and its regular massacres of Palestinians in Gaza, it is seeking supportive governments in Europe and the US to undermine free speech as a way of shielding it from criticism and measures aimed at holding it to account for its gross violations of international law. There is a very coordinated and well-financed campaign led by Israel and its supporters aiming to criminalise political activism against Israeli occupation, based on the particular fear that the worldwide Palestinian-led campaign of Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) is succeeding.

At the moment, one of the most significant attacks on the movement is taking place in France. On Sunday the 6th of March, in Paris, a woman demonstrating to defend the rights of women was arrested and held for several hours in a police station. Her crime? Wearing a t-shirt on which was written “Boycott Israel Apartheid – Justice in Palestine”. BDS activists throughout the country face legal retaliation, based on the outrageous so-called “Alliot-Marie Circular”, according to which calling for the boycott of Israeli goods is a form of “racial hatred”. Organisations in France have put together petitions1 contesting this attack on the movement.

On the other side of the Channel, the British government is implementing a new set of rules that will make it harder for local councils and other public bodies including universities to make ethical procurement or investment decisions. Prime Minister David Cameron does not even try to conceal the truth and made very clear that these changes are designed to counter the growing BDS movement. Indeed, his Secretary of State for Justice, Michael Gove, has stated that the BDS movement is committing “a crime worse than apartheid”.

All over Europe, non-violent grassroots human rights activists are under threat.

In addition Israeli Intelligence Minister Yisrael Katz said at a large Israeli anti-BDS conference, held on March 28 in Jerusalem, that Israel should engage in “targeted civil eliminations” of BDS « leaders » with the help of Israeli intelligence. That was at the very same conference at which EU Ambassador to Israel was participating alongside settler leaders. It is seriously alarming when government ministers anywhere make such threats against human rights defenders and members of the public.

As threats against BDS grow, it is time for ‘sumoud’ in activist communities - Nada Elia - The attacks on BDS, and BDS organizers, are intensifying globally. “The BDS organizations will have no rest,” warned Gilad Erdan at the recent “Stop BDS” conference in Occupied Jerusalem.

One of the better-known BDS organizers, Omar Barghouti, has been directly named as a target of “civil assassination.”

At best, this “civil assassination” would be a smear campaign. But of course we know better than to believe Israel will do little more than character assassination. Israel has historically assassinated politically-active civilians such as Ghassan Kanafani, who would have turned 80 this month (April 8) had he not been killed in a booby-trapped car at the age of 36. Kanafani was killed as he entered his car in Beirut in 1972. This month is also the anniversary of the assassination of Kamal Nasser, a poet and advocate of non-violence, who was killed on April 9, 1973. Other civilians include translators, lawyers, and scientists. The list is long, as Eyal Weizman observes that “targeted assassinations have become the most significant and frequent form of Israeli military attack” in areas it does not control directly.

These are not “character assassinations,” the targeted individuals were murdered, sometimes with friends and family. Of course, character assassinations, or at least the attempt at such, also abound. Israel has taken a very broad brush and colored everyone critical of its official policies as anti-Semitic. In light of Israel’s blood-soaked record, the recent threats directed at Barghouti, and other unnamed BDS organizers and activists, should not be taken lightly. We are already maligned, attempts at silencing us have failed, and Israel is getting desperate. >>>

Human Rights Watch report says Palestinian children beaten, kicked while in Israeli custody -  Sophie McNeill - A new Human Rights Watch report accuses Israeli police of abusing Palestinian children in their custody, with claims unnecessary force is being used to arrest and detain children.

It comes as Israeli authorities announced a 12-year-old Palestinian girl — believed to be the youngest female prisoner ever incarcerated by Israel — would be released from prison early.

Human Rights Watch said Israeli security forces were using unnecessary force in arresting and detaining children, in some cases beating them, and holding them in unsafe and abusive conditions. >>>

World Report 2016: ‘Politics of Fear’ Threatens Rights - In the 659-page World Report 2016, its 26th edition, Human Rights Watch reviews human rights practices in more than 90 countries. In his introductory essay, Executive Director Kenneth Roth writes that the spread of terrorist attacks beyond the Middle East and the huge flows of refugees spawned by repression and conflict led many governments to curtail rights in misguided efforts to protect their security. At the same time, authoritarian governments throughout the world, fearful of peaceful dissent that is often magnified by social media, embarked on the most intense crackdown on independent groups in recent times. >>>
