Israel’s legal warfare on BDS fosters repression and McCarthyism across the world  - The global movement supporting the Palestinian people’s right to freedom, justice and equality has taken impressive steps into the political mainstream in recent years. Efforts by the Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement to hold Israel accountable for its serious violations of international law and to end international complicity in these violations are more widely supported and impactful than ever before.

Israel’s current government, its most racist ever, has dropped all pretences of “enlightenment” and “democracy”. This has helped to expose Israel’s regime of occupation, settler-colonialism and apartheid to world public opinion like never before. In this context, and given the fast spread of BDS in recent years, Israel has tried hard but failed to slow down its gradually intensifying international isolation in the academic, cultural, sports and, to a lesser extent, economic sphere.

As a result, Israel, its lobby groups and its right-wing supporters have launched an unprecedented, well-funded global campaign to silence Palestinian narratives and criminalize BDS advocacy, especially in western countries. Israeli-induced attacks on free speech and civil rights in Europe, the US and Canada, among others, are fostering an ominous environment of bullying, intimidation and repression that has all the hallmarks of the era of McCarthyism in the US and the worst days of the apartheid regime in South Africa.

In a desperate attempt to suppress BDS from above, after losing many battles for the hearts and minds at the grassroots level, Israel and its pressure groups, including anti-Palestinian billionaires, are pressuring governments, legislatures and officials in the west to implement patently anti-democratic measures that threaten civil liberties at large. >>>

Nun will die israelische Regierung Abhilfe schaffen. >>>

Israeli Aircrafts Drop Toxic Materials on Jordan Valley’s West Bank - Poisonous substances were dropped from Israeli aircrafts in Palestinian agricultural and residential areas in the Jordan Valley on Friday, according to local sources.

Azem Mohamed, coordinator of agricultural relief projects in Jordan Valley, said that the Israeli side justified its action by claiming it was aimed at fighting wild animals in the Jordan Valley. Mohamed affirmed to the Palestinian Information Center (PIC) that the dropped materials pose a risk to livestock, which the majority of the Jordan Valley residents depend on for food and income. >>>

El Al captain indoctrinates the passengers, but only in Hebrew -  The El Al captain addresses the passengers in Hebrew on a flight from Tel Aviv to Berlin. He explains the memorial plates for Jews who perished in the holocaust (made of brass, scattered along sidewalks) and rejoices over the existence of Israel, thanks to which we will not turn into memorial plates again. But he doesn’t translate his statements on the plane into English. And I think, since when should I believe that Israel is safer for Jews, after the Nakba and the occupation and the atomic bomb? >>>

The rise of the pro-censorship journalist -  Noam Sheizaf - The latest right-wing sting operation against Israeli human rights groups made it to primetime this week. Israeli journalists, once again, played a central role in shaming those who criticize the occupation.

A Channel 2 report that aired Thursday night accused Israeli human rights organization Breaking the Silence of gathering confidential information on Israeli military operations through its interviews with former soldiers. The report was based on hidden camera footage recorded by right-wing group “Ad Kan,” which infiltrates and gathers information in order to shame anti-occupation organizations. The footage shows Breaking the Silence activists collecting testimonies from several former soldiers, which include questions on Gaza tunnels as well as military equipment and positions.

By Friday morning, Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon had already ordered an investigation into the activities of the organization, accusing it of attempting to collect state secrets. Others went as for as talking about espionage. The following is a translation of a Hebrew piece I wrote. >>>

Jerusalem, Palestine - 1935

Gazans remember Rachel Corrie on the 13th anniversary of her death - On March 16, 2016, Ashley Malloy spoke via Skype to writers from We Are Not Numbers about drama, passion and how they have come together in the one-woman play, “My Name is Rachel Corrie.”

Ashley, who now is 23—the same age as Rachel when she was run over by an Israeli bulldozer while trying to prevent the demolition of a home in Rafah, Gaza—is currently touring the United States in the play, and I caught up with her just before her performance in Mt. Ranier, MD. This interview was shot by Maurice Jacobson, a mentor for We Are Not Numbers from Inshallah Media Productions, who currently is working to organize a multi-media exposition called “We All Live in Gaza,” planned for Washington, DC, on the second anniversary of the 2014 Israeli war on Gaza. >>>
